6-Point Water Plan

University Park Schools Water Testing Results

Dear District Family,

As we near the start of school, we want to assure you that the District has been closely monitoring developments related to the elevated lead levels in University Park's water. The District has outlined a 6-Point Plan to provide a safe learning environment for our students.

As a proactive measure, the District contacted the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) on August 6th to request testing and risk assessments for Crete-Monee Middle School and Coretta Scott King Magnet School. The water samples were drawn on August 8th and we are currently awaiting the results. Last week, District officials also met with the president of AQUA Illinois to discuss the status of their progress and their plans to address the issues facing our families. I remain in close contact with Mayor Roudezfor updates and opportunities for the District to offer support.

Out of an abundance of caution, the District will conduct water testing of ALL District Schools on September 19, 2019. We intend to share the results and, if needed, a plan to address the findings with our stakeholders. The health and safety of our students and staff is our highest priority.

Please know that we share your concern, and our thoughts are with you and your families during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kara Coglianese
Superintendent

Water drop splashCM201-U is taking every precaution to ensure a safe school environment. In advance of the results from our water tests of Crete-Monee Middle School and Coretta Scott King Magnet, the District plans to enact the following at the two schools:

6-Point Plan

  1. All drinking fountains will be turned off and water dispensers supplied to CM Middle School and Coretta Scott King Magnet in place of the drinking fountains.
  2. *Portable hand-washing stations will be provided for each bathroom so students do not wash their hands in the sink. The water to the sinks will be turned off to prevent accidental usage.
  3. Hand-sanitizer dispensers will be installed in each classroom to provide continual cleanliness.
  4. *A filtration system will be installed so dishes can be washed using water. the filtration system will be installed before the hot water tank and used solely by the dish-washing machine.
  5. Use a chemical called Sanibet to clean tables in the cafeteria and desks in the classroom. The chemical is safe and does not have to be mixed with water.
  6. The Food Service staff will create food items that are hot or cold using fewer pans.

*If test results from IDPH show unacceptable levels of lead in water.
